'Like' Documentary Screening
Are you using technology, or is technology using you? On Tuesday, March 26 from 7 p.m. – 9 p.m., Fusion Academy Greenwich and the Anxiety Institute will host a free showing of “Like,” an IndieFlix original documentary exploring the impact of social media on our lives. Local experts will be on-site for an informative Q&A session. Appropriate for all ages, “Like” equips viewers with resources to self-regulate social media usage and explores the effects of technology on the brain. “In my six years with Fusion, I have seen first-hand the impact that social media can have on children, especially on daily engagement,” said Maggie Gregory, head of school at Fusion Academy Greenwich. “It is on us as educators, parents and community members, to encourage meaningful connections beyond the screen, which create value in our lives and schools.” The screening will feature local professionals who have extensive expertise in social media impact on teens and in the following areas: adolescent and adult psychology, mental health, anxiety treatment, and neurodevelopment. • Dr. Daniel Villiers, co-founder of the Anxiety Institute • Dr. Orla Cashman, LCSW, founder of Greenwich Psychotherapy & Associates • Dr. Tom Weigel, MD, child and adolescent psychiatrist from the Anxiety Institute The screening aims to create a dialogue among parents, professionals and students about the new norm of social media. “In our daily work with adolescents and young adults, we see firsthand the powerful impact that social media can have on their lives,” said Dr. Daniel Villiers, co-founder of the Anxiety Institute. “For that reason, I’m thrilled to host screenings of LIKE, a film which sheds light on the magnitude of the situation, and also offers smart, pragmatic insight into helping people self-regulate, and learn how to be there for each other.” Fusion Academy Greenwich and the Anxiety Institute aim to produce a safe environment where attendees can talk about social media’s impact on issues like anxiety and depression, and how to address the added pressure. ‘Like’ is a part of IndieFlix, which is now one of the largest global screening services for films focusing on social impact. The event will take place at the Bow Tie Cinemas Regent 8 on Tuesday, March 26. There is no cost to attend, but registration is required at www.FusionGreenwich.com. Fusion Academy is an accredited private school serving students in grades 6-12, offering one-to-one learning (a learning model offering one teacher per student).
